The Periodical Passion

When it comes to my hobbies, painting is one that has been a more recent discovery. I started painting back in high school but only a handful of times. I didn’t really find much enthusiasm in the activity, mostly because I hadn’t developed my own artistic style and because sketching and drawing had been my main medium since I was little. It wasn’t until about three years ago that I gave painting another try and quickly discovered how much I enjoyed it. I quickly developed my own personal style by taking inspiration from multiple artists and painting styles and combining the elements that attracted me the most. I soon fell in love with painting landscapes and with each new painting I create, I learn to master new techniques while getting to express myself in a creative way.

The beautiful thing about hobbies is how they tie into who we are as individuals. Everyone has different hobbies and interests, each one relating to the person’s style, likes, and even their personality. Creative people typically enjoy performing tasks that involve working with their hands, getting to come up with creative ideas, creating something new and original. Some people enjoy being active and outdoors, they typically enjoy sports, gardening, anything that requires physical exercise, and getting to be outside getting their hands dirty. Hobbies also allow for us to have an escape from our reality as they provide a means for relieving stress, anxiety, and worries that come from our everyday.

I discovered that baking was my stress reliever many years ago, and to this day when I need an escape or something to relax me when the stress kicks in, baking is my sweet fix. We all have those hobbies that just take our troubles away and that is a wonderful tool to have for when you need a chance to breathe. But sometimes it isn’t stress that we’re dealing with, sometimes it's sheer boredom. We get used to our routine and sometimes even some of our hobbies become a part of our routine. Particularly the hobby that is one of our greatest passions. For me, that’s baking, for my husband that’s drawing, and ultimately everyone has a passion that is a part of their daily or weekly routine. That is not a bad thing, it’s actually a good thing to have healthy ways to spend your time. But every now and then, one wants to shake things up, break up the monotony.

That is when other hobbies or passions come into play. The periodical passion, as I like to call them, are the hobbies we typically don’t do every day or maybe even weekly. They are the type that you bust out of the closet when you need a change of pace in your life. They sometimes require more time because it may not be one you can start and finish in a day. For me, painting has become my periodical passion. I enjoy painting but it's an activity that I have to be in the mood for and feel inspired to work on it. It’s not a hobby I can do every day and never get bored. I think we all have those, and it varies from person to person. What may be one person's periodical passion may be another's greatest passion.

So when I find myself needing to change things up, I bust out my paintbrushes and start to let my creative juices flow onto the canvas. Sometimes I am in the zone and manage to finish one in a day or two, other times it turns into a project that takes a week or two. Either way, it has become a great way for me to break up the monotony and give me something to do when I find myself with too much time on my hands and not sure what to do. Whenever you find yourself in the same situation, try turning to a hobby or activity you haven’t done in a while. Perhaps try something new, you may be surprised with how much you’ll enjoy it.
