When it's Cold Outside

As we start off the New Year it seems that 2018 has decided to kick things off with a little cold weather, or should I say freezing weather. From snow-covered cars to frozen iguanas, the time for new beginnings has made me want to bundle up and stay inside. So what does one do when they are driven indoors by the harsh northern winds and dropping temperatures? In today’s modern world it seems like there isn’t much to do besides the usual household to-do list that only seems to grow. Yet, most of the time we put it off and try to find something to entertain ourselves with, and at times it seems that there’s nothing to do. But sometimes all we need to do is pick up a good book and read.
It’s not until I have time on my hands that I realize how much I enjoy reading. Some people are born book fanatics and others are more of the every now and then readers. When I read a book I want to have time to enjoy it and have as few interruptions as possible, but that would only happen in a perfect world where time wasn’t an issue. So when I find myself with time on my hands I grab my newest book, make a cup of tea, wrap myself in a cozy blanket, and read. It isn’t until the winter weather or summer months that I remember just how enjoyable reading is and how every time I finish a good book I just want to keep reading. That’s probably why I can’t buy more than two books at a time or I wouldn’t get anything done.
I think that’s one of the reasons I enjoy winter so much. Not necessarily the freezing temperatures or week-long colds but because it’s a time of year where we find ourselves with very little to do and are in a way forced into rediscovering the simple things in life like sitting by the fire drinking hot cocoa, snuggling in a warm blanket looking at photo albums, or reading a good book in your favorite cozy chair.
Sometimes it takes a little harsh weather to remind us to sit back and enjoy the simpler things in life. In our busy everyday lives, it can be easy to forget just how wonderful those simple things are and just how much we really enjoy them. I always forget how much I enjoy reading and it’s not until I’m forced to find something to do that I remember how much of a bookworm I can be. I remember how simple reading can be and how at times I take it for granted.
So as we brace ourselves for the rest of the cold that’s to come, let’s take the time to enjoy the simpler things that seem to get lost in our modern world. If its sipping coffee while watching the sunrise or reading your favorite book while it snows just remember that even when it’s cold outside there’s so much we can do inside. Maybe you can finally finish that to-do list or take a nap by the fireplace.
